Why it caught on: in The Wolf of Wall Street (2013) Jordan Belfort, played by Leonardo DiCaprio, tests his friends at a diner by holding out a pen: "Sell me this pen." One of them grabs it and asks him to write his name down - supply and demand. The challenge became the internet's way of asking anyone to pitch something nobody needs.
